Bridges

What is a bridge?
A dental bridge literally bridges the gap created by one of more missing teeth. A typical bridge comprises one or more artificial teeth known as pontics, which are held in place by two dental crowns, or abutments.

When is a bridge necessary?
  1. To be able to chew better
  2. To improve the appearance
  3. To prevent teeth from standing crooked and/or protruding

What kind of bridges are there?
In a regular bridge, the abutment teeth are located on opposite sides of the open space.
In a cantilever bridge, the abutment teeth are located on only one side of the missing tooth or molar.
In a resin-retained bridge or Maryland bridge, a pontic (false tooth) is attached to metal bands that are hidden with a white-colored composite resin and attached to the back sides of the teeth on either side of the pontic. This kind of bridge is usually indicatedpossible when the teeth on either side of the open space are almost intact.

Placing a bridge
First, your dentist (or we) will explain the procedure to you and tell exactly what is going to happen. The procedure comprises the following steps:
  • Prepare (trimming and shaping) the tooth
  • Take a dental impression to determine the shape of the crown
  • Take a bite impression to determine the height of the crown
  • Choose the shade that most closely matches the color of the neighboring teeth.
  • Place a temporary structure until the final bridge can be permanently placed.

What does a bridge cost?
The Nederlandse Zorgautoriteit (NZa: Dutch Healthcare Authority) sets the tariffs and the descriptions of dental treatments. Bridge fabrication costs depend on the materials used and on the dental laboratory fees. They also depend on whether preparatory build-up is needed. Please ask your dentist for a quotation.
